The common hippopotamus or Nile hippopotamus is a large herbivorous mammal from sub-Saharan Africa and one of only two non-extinct species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus. Its name comes from ancient Greek, meaning "horse of the river".
