The mallard (Spatula querquedula) is a small duck that breeds in large numbers throughout the Palearctic, especially in western Eurasia. The species is strictly migratory, with the entire population migrating in winter to southern Africa, to India (in particular to the Santragachi region), to Bangladesh (around the natural reservoirs of the Sylhet district) and to the Australasia, where it forms large flocks. This species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 .
