At the age of seven or eight,[citation needed] boys of the nobility were sent to live with great lords as pages. The pages learned basic social skills from the women of the lord's house and began basic training in the use of weapons and riding. At the age of 14, the young man became a squire, a knight in training.Squires were delegated to a knight who continued the youth's education. The squire was the knight's companion and servant. The squire's duties included polishing armor and weapons (prone to rust), helping his knight dress and undress, tending to his belongings, and even sleeping in the doorway occupied by the door as a guard.
