Indigenous Tibira victim of Homophobia Brazil Bag

In 1614, a Tupinambá Indian was executed, with the consent of religious from the Catholic Church on a mission in Brazil, on account of his sexual orientation. Known as Tibira do Maranhão — tibira is a term used by indigenous people to refer to a homosexual —, her case is the first record of death from homophobia in Brazil. LGBT activists want the character to be recognized as a martyr and campaign to spread the word. The story of Tibira do Maranhão was rescued by sociologist and anthropologist Luiz Mott, a professor at the Federal University of Bahia and founder of the non-governmental organization Grupo Gay da Bahia.
