The harlequin is a character from the Commedia dell'arte, whose function, at the beginning, was restricted to entertaining the audience during breaks in the shows. His importance was gradually asserting itself and his costume, made of multicolored patches usually in the shape of a diamond, even more highlighted him on the scene.
