The third largest city in Ecuador, at an altitude of 2500 meters, it gained importance in the 19th century for being the birthplace of a fashion phenomenon: the toquilla straw hats. Because it was exported by the Spaniards via the Panama Canal, the ornament ended up being called “Panama Hat”. One of the pioneers was Santos Dumont, who already wore his in 1906. The fashion was also popular among Hollywood stars, and heartthrobs like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable and Michael Jackson wore Panama hats. It is one of the symbols of Malandragem in Rio de Janeiro.
