In the 17th century, glasses with ear mounts were invented. Robert Grosseteste and Roger Bacon created the first modern eyeglasses, but it was Benjamin Franklin, in 1785, who invented the first bifocal eyeglasses for distance and near vision. The production of modern eyewear began in 1850.
