They kidnapped the bodies of the dead to enjoy their love, so they were represented in the tombs as if they were waiting for the dead, especially the young to snatch them. They were cruel and violent, being related to destructive winds, cyclones and storms. Harpies are creatures from Greek mythology, often represented as birds of prey with a woman's face and breasts. In Jason's story, harpies were sent to punish the blind Thracian king Phineus by stealing his food at every meal.
